Frigate Chapter Four: 1st Planking

February 28th, 2008

Took this fairly steadily. I decided the best approach, knowing my own limitations, was to do only 1 plank a night. As opposed to my sloop I had access to my hand drill and the pins with this kit actually fit the pin pusher! This made things a lot easier.

After the top 4 or so planks which I did not size I would take a plank for each side place it and mark the location where it started to overlap the plank above.

Here I would take of a triangle of wood to the bow end and at times the stern then I would proceed outside to bevel the upper edge of the plank before placing it to soak for 45 minutes or so.

Then I would place the plank drilling the holes and then using the lovely pin pusher to attach it to the hull. Then I would leave it an hour or overnight to dry. Once the plank had dried I then removed added the glue before refitting and leaving to dry around 24 hours before repeating.

Things went fairly well. A couple of bad lines are visible at the bow end but on the positive side the entire hull was covered without recourse to filler and the entire hull sanded out quite nicely.

The key I feel - and this is something which I did not feel for my first model is that you should not expect to speed through something as uninteresting as this. If you speed you loose accuracy and hence create problems for yourself later.
