Frigate Chapter Six: Wale,Stern and Bow

May 29th, 2008

The Wale went on easily enough. Measue from below the gunports to get the correct distance. As usual it ended up a tighter fit than the other planks.

Making the stern decoration was interesting.Liberal use of pegs and sellotape helped keep things attached but I still needed plenty of time trying to work out the relative height of the items The side gallerys also needed a lot of work to make fit.

The next stage was to provide a basic paint layer to help with those nasty lines. Most of the guides seem to indicate that the best time to paint is after things have been attached I go in a different direction and think the best time to paint something is before it is stuck on. I suffered the torments of the damned (well not really) with my first model trying to paint a straight line even with the help of sellotape.

The runner strips were next to be added and proved difficult to match on either side though my habit of painting before adding the rows at least meant that the only paint nightmares I would befaced with would be in the difficult red bit inside the upper section.

The front decoration was much easier than I expected. I still remembered, with a vague sense of horror and foreboading my last attempt on my sloop but this went much easier and everything slotted in nicely (well some re-work was neccessary)
