12 - Painting and Bow
As mentioned last page I decided to paint as my planking as a beginner is unlikely to be tidy enough to stand alone. Once I had made this decision the next was what colours to use. Eventually I decided to go for the standard of a yellow band around the gun ports and black elsewhere. This does mean I have to be careful what I add without painting as it is always harder to paint a line after gluing something than painting before and touching up.
As
my hand is not known for its stunning straight lines I used
sellotape to mark the boundaries of the paint lines I had
decided on. Then when painting over brushed away from the
tape as you will never get it watertight.
Once removed the next step was to tidy up any parts where paint had escaped. This will be a continual process whenever a paint pot comes out...
The next stages were some fairly fiddly
bits with the bow rails and my earlier misjudgement with the
bulkheads returned to haunt me. As my gun port bulkhead did
not follow the exact line
of the capping rail it also managed to push out the location
of some of the bow details.
The first parts to be added were the head
rail frames which glue happily to the slots in the bow
itself and the bow railings which needed pre-painting yellow
as shown here.
Next up came two more sets of rails a grating for the top, cat head brackets (black) and cathead supports. It certainly makes the front look more interesting.
